When we began our journey as foster parents, our initial goal was to adopt through the fostering system. However, we quickly learned that the primary aim of the foster system is to reunify children with their families. Despite this, we continued fostering, and over the past 2 1/2 years, we have had the privilege of caring for eight children total so far, and once with four kids in our home at once.
Fostering has brought immense joy and growth to our family. It has strengthened our relationship and given us a new perspective on life. The happiness of having children in our home is immeasurable. Yet, the journey has not been without its difficulties. Navigating a broken OCS system in Alaska and dealing with parents who are not always cooperative have been significant challenges. The most heart-wrenching part, however, is saying goodbye to the children we’ve grown attached to.
Despite the uncertainties, our commitment to the children we care for remains strong. We continue to hope for the opportunity to adopt if possible. As a family, we’ve grown in many ways, and fostering has given us a new outlook on life. Every child we’ve fostered has left a lasting mark on our hearts, and we’re reminded every day of the strength and goodness in them. Fostering has taught us that love isn’t limited by time or circumstance, and it’s in the small moments—a shared laugh, a hug, or a child’s new confidence—that we find the greatest joy. We’ll keep going on this journey, inspired by the hope that every child can find the care and love they deserve.
